In the Spring of 2019, the London City School District published its Portrait of a Graduate, which highlights the key skills and attitudes necessary for district graduates to have success in college and careers. Our district uses the Portrait of a Graduate to help design meaningful teaching and learning experiences for our students.
The following students were recognized during the December Regular Board of Education meeting for substantially demonstrating the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. Congratulations to each of these students!
William Dunham (4th Grade) - London Elementary School
Will Dunham is an exceptional candidate for this month’s Portrait of a Graduate. Will is very smart and excels in all subjects. He has been identified as gifted in reading and math. Will achieved a perfect score on his Ohio State Mathematics Assessment, earning a place on our Ring of Honor in the cafeteria at LES. He shows critical thinking and problem-solving skills as he works. When he has questions about a topic, he researches them and often shares his findings. Incidentally, if you want to know anything about Green Lantern or any of the other colored lantern superheroes, Will can tell you! He has grown in flexibility and adaptability this year and can go with the flow. Outside of school, he sings in two different choirs: the LES choir and Treble Tones. He performed during the Cabaret at the high school, Old Fashioned Christmas, and more. LES is proud to recognize Will Dunham as this month’s portrait of a graduate.
Madeleine Herdman (7th) - London Middle School
The saying "Big things come in small packages" is undeniably true when it comes to Madeleine Herdman, an exemplary LMS student embodying our district's commitment to fostering future-ready individuals. Currently, in her second year of middle school, Madeleine stands out for her remarkable achievements and positive demeanor.
Throughout her tenure at LMS, Madeleine consistently graces the Honor Roll/Merit Honor Roll with her academic excellence. In two years, she actively contributed to the Student Council, dedicating herself to community service projects like the Shoe Box Drive, candy bagging, and the courtyard restoration at London Health and Rehab.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Madeleine has taken on roles as the manager of the girls' basketball team and an office helper. Beyond her valuable assistance, her repertoire includes impressive magic tricks, a testament to her skills honed since sixth grade. Noteworthy is her role in negotiating for new microwaves for classmates, ensuring a daily warm meal service. Her infectious attitude makes "Maddie Mondays" the optimal start to any work week.
Outside the school environment, Madeleine is deeply engaged in the county 4-H program, showcasing her dedication by exhibiting pigs and cows at the Madison County Fair. Her enduring commitment to 4-H is evident when asked about her involvement, to which she responded, "Forever."
Despite some health challenges, Madeleine navigates life with the most positive and caring attitude, surpassing any student encountered in my 21 years of education. Thus, the adage "big things come in small packages" finds its embodiment in Madeleine Herdman, an LMS student who exemplifies our district's vision of cultivating future-ready students.
Jase Cox (11th) - London Unlimited
Junior Jase Cox stands as an exceptional student within the London Unlimited program. Distinguished by his exceptional academics reflected in an unblemished 4.0 GPA.
Jase takes the majority of his courses through LU, but continues to come in person for his favorite elective class, the Broadcast and Video Production course under the tutelage of Mr. Karl. His enthusiasm for video editing not only marks his passion but is also his goal for a professional career within this dynamic field.
With a tenure of four years in the LU program, Jase has not only consistently demonstrated academic prowess but has also exhibited a well-rounded skill set. His adept communication skills, proficiency in problem-solving, and unwavering respect for peers and self stand out as attributes. Furthermore, Jase's demonstrated adaptability, coupled with his proficiency in literacy, numeracy, and technology, positions him as a standout student poised for success in both his academic pursuits and prospective career in video production.
Daniel Johnson (12th) - London High School
Daniel Johnson is a Senior at London High School. Daniel served as a member of the LHS Student Principal search committee and is the face behind Danny J Films and Photography. Daniel has found a way to connect with the greater London community and other local schools through social media to share his love and passion for photography. Through his network, he also has created an opportunity for others to share in the moments that he has captured. Daniel's skill set requires him to be patient with finding the right moment to snap the right shot or even filtering through the thousands of pictures that are taken throughout Friday night. He has found a way to share his gift with others by including them in taking pictures while also providing tips and suggestions to grow their craft. Daniel shares his photos with the yearbook which will give his peers something to remember not just now but for many years in the future. Daniel is active in his internship with the tech department connecting with Mr. Shumaker and Mr. Riegel to provide support to the day-to-day operations of the department. Daniel is good-hearted, willing to share, and is a model Red Raider in his daily actions.
